Call for Papers: Rights to Privacy and Data Protection in Times of Armed Conflict
Asaf Lubin (University of Indiana, lubina@iu.edu) and Russell Buchan (University of Sheffield, R.J.Buchan@sheffield.ac.uk) have been asked to lead a new NATO Cooperative Cyber Defence Centre of Excellence (CCDCOE) sponsored project entitled: 'The Rights to Privacy and Data Protection in Times of Armed Conflict.'
The CCDCOE has issued a news item that provides a good overview of the aims, objectives, and anticipated outcomes of the project: https://ccdcoe.org/news/2021/ccdcoe-to-launch-a-pioneering-study-on-digital-rights-in-armed-conflicts/. They have further created a dedicated sub-page for the project: https://ccdcoe.org/research/data-protection-and-privacy-in-armed-conflict/.
In short, the aim of the project is to publish a CCDCOE book containing chapters written by leading commentators, both seniors and juniors, examining whether and to what extent different rules and regimes of international law can be called upon to protect the rights to informational privacy and data integrity and accessibility during times of hostilities. The editors intend to hold a conference in Berlin in September 2021 to discuss draft chapters for the book. Subsequently, chapters will be finalized and the book will be launched at CyCon 2022 in Tallinn, Estonia.
CCDCOE has issued a 'Call for Papers', inviting colleagues to submit abstracts of chapters to be considered for publication in the book. The call is available via the above links. The editors welcome abstracts on all topics broadly relating to the application of digital rights in times of armed conflict, and would particularly appreciate contributions from authors with underrepresented backgrounds and viewpoints.
If you have any questions about this project please don’t hesitate to reach out to the editors directly.
