Justice Doherty has had a long and distinguished career – in practice (Northern Ireland and Papua New Guinea) and on the bench. On the latter, this included, i.a., her appointment in 1987 as Principal Magistrate in Papua New Guinea, where from 1988-1997 she served as a Judge of the Supreme and National Courts. From 2003-2005, Justice Doherty served as a Judge of the High Court and the Court of Appeal of Sierra Leone; she was appointed by the United Nations as a judge of the Special Court of Sierra Leone in 2005. Since 2002 she has served as Parole Commissioner for Northern Ireland. In 1997 Justice Doherty was awarded the CBE for outstanding contributions to the judiciary and community, and in 2010 she received an honorary Doctorate of Law (LL.D) from the University of Ulster.
